Renewing Your Maid Insurance: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re an employer in Singapore, renewing your maid insurance is one of the most important responsibilities to ensure your domestic helper stays protected and that you remain compliant with Ministry of Manpower (MOM) regulations. Missing the renewal deadline can lead to costly penalties and leave both you and your helper unprotected. Here’s everything you need to know to renew your maid insurance smoothly and on time.

When to renew your maid insurance

Maid insurance is typically valid for two years, matching the duration of your helper’s work permit. You should start the renewal process at least one month before the policy expires. This gives you enough time to review coverage, compare plans, and avoid any gap in protection,  which can cause delays in work permit renewal.

Step-by-step renewal process

Step 1: Check your current policy expiry date

Look for your maid insurance certificate or log in to your insurer’s online portal. Note the policy expiry date and set a reminder.

Step 2: Review your current coverage

Consider whether your existing policy still meets your needs. For example, if your helper is now assisting with elderly care, you may want to increase medical or personal accident coverage.

Step 3: Compare insurance providers

Different insurers offer varying benefits, add-ons, and premiums. Compare key features such as:

  • Hospitalisation and surgical coverage
  • Personal accident and death benefits
  • Third-party liability
  • Repatriation and wage compensation
  • Security bond requirements

Step 4: Purchase or renew your policy

Once you’ve decided, you can renew directly through your insurer’s website.

Step 5: Submit proof of renewal to MOM (if applicable)

If you’re renewing your helper’s work permit at the same time, you’ll need to submit proof of your new insurance policy and security bond to MOM.

How to avoid coverage gaps

  • Renew early: Don’t wait until the last week, some insurers may take a few days to activate your new policy.
  • Set calendar reminders: Keep digital reminders for both insurance and work permit expiry dates.

Quick tip: Bundle your renewals

If your helper’s work permit renewal is coming up, align both the insurance renewal and work permit renewal together to save time and avoid administrative hassle.
