Welcoming a domestic helper into a pet-friendly home can be a rewarding experience for everyone, humans and animals alike. Whether you have a loyal dog, a curious cat, or an energetic parrot, it’s essential to ensure that both your helper and your pets are safe, comfortable, and well-prepared to share the same space.
Here are some important safety tips and guidelines to help domestic helpers work confidently and responsibly in households with animals.
1. Start with a proper introduction
Just like people, pets can be sensitive to change and unfamiliar faces. Help ease the transition by introducing your domestic helper to your pets gradually. During the first meeting:
- Keep dogs on a leash
- Let cats approach at their own pace
- Supervise early interactions
- Explain your pet's personality, behavior, and any known triggers to your maid so they know what to expect.
2. Provide clear pet care instructions
Every pet is different. Provide your helper with a written list or schedule that includes:
- Feeding times and portion sizes
- Walking or playtime routines
- Any medications or allergies
- Grooming schedules
You can also use the Ministry of Helpers’ Household Scheduler to create a customised daily routine that includes pet care responsibilities.
3. Set safety boundaries
Some pets may be territorial, or certain areas of the house may be off-limits. Clearly communicate:
- Which rooms pets are allowed in
- Whether your helper should handle litter boxes, dog waste, or feeding raw food
- How to secure doors and gates to prevent escapes
If your helper has allergies or fears related to animals, it’s important to know this early on and adjust duties if necessary.

4. Teach emergency protocols
Make sure your helper knows what to do in case:
- Your pet is sick or injured
- There’s a bite or scratch incident
- The pet escapes or runs off
Provide the vet’s contact information, nearest animal hospital, and any backup contact (such as the employer or another family member). A printed emergency guide can be helpful.
5. Promote hygiene and cleanliness
Pets are lovely but they can also be messy. Equip your helper with pet-safe cleaning products and gloves, and show them how to manage:
- Pet hair on furniture
- Accidents or spills
- Cleaning cages or litter boxes
Always keep pet food and cleaning supplies stored separately, and wash hands thoroughly after handling pets.
6. Encourage open communication
Some domestic helpers may not have experience with animals. Encourage your helper to ask questions, share concerns, or speak up if they feel unsure about a task. A positive environment where your helper feels safe and supported benefits both your household and your pets.
Domestic helpers can become wonderful companions not just for the family, but also for the pets they care for. With proper guidance, safety measures, and open communication, helpers can play a valuable role in keeping your furry (or feathered!) family members are happy and healthy.
At Ministry of Helpers, we support families and domestic workers through every step of the hiring and onboarding process. With our digital tools and training resources, including pet care modules powered by StepUp, we make it easier for helpers to gain the knowledge and confidence they need for any home setup.
